How long Should you stay in the sauna

For many people, going to the sauna is a way to relax. Whether you go to the sauna after a work out,  to unwind, or to simply maintain your overall well being, there are certain guidelines to be followed strictly. Sauna can be beneficial for your health as you long you know how to use it.

Benefits of using sauna

There are actually a lot of health benefits in using a sauna. For one, it improves overall heart function and improves breathing. It also lowers the risk of stroke.

For those who are working out, a trip to the sauna can reduce muscle soreness and inflammation. Atheletes also go to sauna for this very reason.

For older men, sauna can lower the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Women often go to sauna for detox. Sauna causes the body to sweat and release toxins but it should never be use for weight loss as this is not advisable.

It is a good habit to visit the sauna at least one or twice a week to achieve these benefits.

Spending time inside the sauna

How often you go to the sauna and how much time you spend on it should be given priority. According to experts, you should spend small amount of time at the beginning and gradually increase it for a suggested period of time.

For beginners, a mere 5 to 10 minutes is enough for your first session. It is also recommended not to use the sauna for more than 20 minutes even if you regularly do it. Sauna strips of the body of water because of the steam and over staying could simply put you at risk of dehydration.  Sauna is meant for relaxation so if you feel hot enough, dizzy, or light headed, do not extend your stay and get up.

After your first session, you may take a cool shower then go back for another 5 to 10 minutes for a second one if you feel like it. Drinking a glass of cool water between sessions is also recommended. However, these recommended time of use should only apply for people who are generally healthy. If you are taking medication, consult your physician first if you are allowed to use the sauna.

Sauna is also not advisable for pregnant women and children. For those who are recovering from hangover, going to sauna is also not a good idea for it can contribute to feeling ill.

Most sauna don’t impose a time limit on how long should you spend your time in it. That is why, it is important for you to listen to your body and always take into consideration your overall health.
